Advanced Clinical Microneedling in Tweed Heads: Why What We Do Is Nothing Like Basic Skin Needling

By Alice Hemmingsen, RN & Dermal Therapist | Through the Looking Glass Clinic, Tweed Heads

When most people Google "microneedling" they find a fairly uniform description: tiny needles, collagen stimulation, some redness, good for anti-ageing. And while that's not wrong, it's a bit like describing surgery as "doctors with knives."

What we offer at Through the Looking Glass is an advanced clinical microneedling protocol. The Dermapen device is just the starting point. What sets our treatments apart is what happens around it - the clinical assessment, the combination protocols, and the medical-grade actives that turn a good treatment into a genuinely transformative one.

Let me explain what that actually means.

First: How Microneedling Works

The Dermapen creates thousands of precise, controlled micro-channels in the skin - fine enough to be virtually invisible, but enough to trigger your skin's natural healing cascade. Your body responds to those micro-injuries by producing new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid - the proteins responsible for firm, smooth, resilient skin.

A 2023 NIH-published study (Alqam et al.) confirmed microneedling is a safe and effective treatment for skin texture, active acne lesions, and atrophic acne scarring - with results in both inflammatory and non-inflammatory presentations, and a strong safety profile across all skin types including Fitzpatrick III-V.

That's the foundation. But it's what we layer on top that makes the real difference.

The Advanced Protocol: ÜBER Pro Peel + MG Actives

Basic microneedling delivers collagen stimulation. Our advanced protocol delivers collagen stimulation AND targeted clinical actives - driven directly into the dermis through the channels the Dermapen has just opened.

ÜBER Pro Peel is a professional-strength anabolic peel developed specifically for combination with Dermapen microneedling. It's not a peel you'll find in a day spa. Applied immediately post-needling, it works with the open micro-channels to accelerate cellular turnover and drive corrective actives deep into the skin - targeting scarring, pigmentation, congestion, and the signs of ageing at a level that topical application alone simply cannot reach.

MG Actives are medical-grade serums selected and applied as part of your individual protocol. These are clinically formulated concentrations of targeted actives - anti-inflammatory agents, growth factors, peptides, antioxidants - chosen specifically for your skin concern and infused through the micro-channels during treatment.

The science here is significant: research shows that micro-channels created by microneedling increase the penetration of topical actives by up to 300% compared to standard surface application. We're not hoping these ingredients work on your skin. We're driving them directly to where the work needs to happen.

What This Protocol Can Address

With this combination approach, we're treating a far broader range of concerns than basic microneedling alone:

  • Acne scarring (rolling, boxcar, and atrophic scars) - one of the strongest applications

  • Active acne - yes, active. More on this below.

  • Pigmentation and melasma - with the right actives selected for your skin tone

  • Fine lines and skin laxity - stimulating new collagen and elastin

  • Skin texture, tone, and overall quality

  • Enlarged pores

  • Crepey skin on the neck and décolletage

  • Congestion and dull, uneven skin

On Microneedling and Active Acne

Here's where I'll respectfully push back on the standard advice you'll read online.

"Do not microneedle over active acne" is advice written for practitioners without the clinical training to do it safely. As a Registered Nurse and Dermal Therapist, my position is more nuanced.

Cutibacterium acnes - the bacteria responsible for acne - is anaerobic. It thrives in low-oxygen environments deep within the follicle. When the Dermapen opens micro-channels, it exposes those anaerobic environments to oxygen. Combined with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial MG Actives driven directly through those channels, we're treating acne at the source - not just managing it at the surface.

The 2023 NIH study supports this: microneedling effectively reduced active acne lesions without post-treatment complications, including in skin types typically considered higher risk.

I don't treat every active acne presentation with microneedling - clinical judgement is everything here. But for appropriate candidates, this protocol can address active acne and begin correcting the scarring underneath simultaneously. That's a meaningful clinical advantage.

This is an area of particular passion in our clinic. My daughter Ella, who works alongside me, has a special clinical interest in teenage acne - because we both know how profoundly it affects confidence, and how underserved that demographic often is when it comes to advanced skin treatment.

How Often Should You Have This Treatment?

Because this is an advanced combination protocol, the frequency and plan will be tailored to your skin and your goals:

For general skin quality and maintenance:Every 6-8 weeks keeps the collagen stimulation cycle active without over-treating.

For a specific concern - acne scarring, pigmentation, significant texture:A course of 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart is typically recommended, followed by maintenance.

For first-timers:We always start with a single session and a full skin assessment so we can see how your skin responds before building your protocol. No cookie-cutter plans here.

More is not always better. Your skin needs time to complete its healing cycle. I'd rather see you less often and get better results than put you on a treadmill of frequent appointments that impair the very response we're trying to create.

Why Clinical Oversight Matters

Microneedling is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, and the device is only one part of the equation.

Needle depth needs to be adjusted for different facial zones, skin types, and concerns. The wrong depth in the wrong area can cause complications. The selection of actives matters enormously - the wrong serum on the wrong skin can trigger reactions. The peel strength needs to be calibrated to your skin's tolerance and history.

As a Registered Nurse with over 20 years of clinical experience and formal training in Dermal Therapy, I assess your skin individually before every single treatment. I know when this treatment is appropriate, and equally importantly - when it isn't. That clinical layer of decision-making is what separates an advanced protocol from a basic one.

There are genuine contraindications to this treatment:

  • Active isotretinoin (Roaccutane) or recent cessation

  • Active cold sores in the treatment area

  • Keloid scarring history

  • Certain active skin conditions in the area

  • Pregnancy

This is exactly why we consult thoroughly before every treatment.

What to Expect - Experiencing Microneedling in Tweed Heads clinic

Before: Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. We apply a topical numbing cream so your comfort is well managed throughout.

During: You'll feel gentle vibrating pressure - some zones are more sensitive than others. The ÜBER Pro Peel and MG Actives are applied as part of the treatment sequence.

After: Expect redness and warmth for 12-24 hours - similar to a mild sunburn. Some clients experience light peeling or dryness over the following days as the cellular renewal process kicks in. Most people are comfortable in public the next day. We'll give you a detailed aftercare protocol to support your skin's healing.

Ready for the Real Thing?

If you've had basic microneedling elsewhere and weren't wowed by the results - this is likely why. The device is a tool. The protocol is the treatment.

Book a complimentary consultation at our Tweed Heads clinic and let's assess your skin properly. We'll tell you honestly whether this is right for you, what a realistic treatment plan looks like, and what you can actually expect.
